My MatsuriCon Story!

My story on MatsuriCon for Columbus Monthly magazine has finally been posted to its website. I wasn’t completely satisfied with the way it turned out but whatever…it’s too late to complain now. It’s difficult to write about anime for an audience that’s thoroughly unfamiliar with it, but it was good clean fun.

I recently interviewed graphic novelist and University of Cincinnati adjunct professor Carol Tyler about her trilogy, You’ll Never Know (Fantagraphics Books), for the fall issue of Ghettoblaster Magazine (in issue 26…should be out this month). The Eisner Award nominee’s You’ll Never Know, Book I: A Good and Decent Man was released last summer to rave reviews. Book II: Collateral Damage is coming out this month. Only a small portion of the interview will appear in print, so I’ve decided to run the entire thing here. Enjoy!

Squee!: What has it been like for you to recreate your father’s story for print?

Tyler: Hardest thing I’ve ever taken on. So much to juggle: the storyline, the art. The mechanics of making a comic page/book. Oy! I’ve been at this for four years and I’m still not done! I love it, though. I’ve had to wrap my life around getting pages done. I said going in that I didn’t care if I had to live in poverty in order to make this work come to be and sadly, that’s been the case so far. It’s an epic struggle, although worth it a thousand times over.

Squee!: What kind of response have you gotten from readers since the first book was released?

Tyler: Since Book I was published in June 2009, I have had so much positive feedback, especially from soldiers and families. They love that I took on a topic that’s never talked about, I’m told. It has started important conversations because this book is not just a narrative about my dad. It’s about emotional damage caused by war and unfortunately many people can relate.

Squee!: What was your father’s response to Book One: A Good and Decent Man? Did he read it?

Tyler: As soon as it came out, I had copies from the publisher sent directly to my parents’ house. But then I didn’t hear from them. So about a week later I called and I said, “Mom, how’d you like the book?” And she answered, “I couldn’t call you for crying. It’s beautiful!”

“What about dad? What did he think?” She said six hours earlier, he read it from cover to cover, set it down, walked into his shop and was still in there. Later that day, I got in touch with him:

“What’dya think of the book, dad?”

“Wonderful. Now. That fence post you set in the back has got to go over about 5 feet, bla bla . . .”

I know he’s proud of it. At book signings, he comes dressed in his cute little VFW outfit and cries when he meets other veterans. It’s sweet. He’s 91 years old.

Squee!: In what ways did your father’s experiences shape your life growing up?

Tyler: This is the thesis of Book II where I discuss specifically how his emotional distance led to my risky behavior during adolescence. I never felt like I had power or control. I felt about the size of pocket lint and bottle caps. Having raised a child myself, I have to say that I did not get enough affirmation or attention. Dad was tormented. And Mom had issues, too, as you will read in Book II. Somehow, enough goodness prevailed so that I didn’t turn out completely psycho.

Squee!: Were you especially surprised by any aspects of your father’s story? If so, which part?

Tyler: I was surprised at how much tragedy he has suppressed. He and my mother. And so early in their relationship. I’m surprised they survived it all.

Squee!: Give me a quick overview of the second book. Where are we in the narrative?

Tyler: It gets to the root understanding of my life’s difficulties, how it’s seeping through to my daughter. My mom’s great tragedy explained in “The Hannah Story.” And it’s Dad’s tour in Italy and France, just before the Bulge.

Squee!: If you had to break each book down into overarching themes, what would books one and two represent? What about book three?

Tyler: Book I is denial about the problem between my dad and me. Book II examines the problem. Book III is about coming to terms with our issues and healing. [Interviewer’s note: When I saw Tyler at Books by the Banks earlier this month, she said she’s feverishly working on Book III right now and that it should be out early next year.]

Squee!: How does book two compare to book one?

Tyler: Book II is more about the emotional impact on the girl characters. It’s the yin to the yang in Books I and III.

Squee!: Do you think that individuals who have not seen war up close and personal have a tendency to romanticize it at times?

Tyler: Yes, I do believe this happens. Just take a look at returnees. They want to forget about it and get on with their lives. It’s these politicians and issues-oriented agenda people who use the service and sacrifice of our veterans to further their “reason du jour.” However, I will say soldiers are mostly proud of their service and they have/will continue to defend our country. We owe them a lot. I just wish that sentiment could be detached from the jaws of the political right. (And just for the record: my parents are life-long Democrats. They voted for Obama.) Nobody wants to relive the horrors of war. But remember, we must.

Squee!: How has your telling this story changed your relationship with your father?

Tyler: While he is proud and all that, he still isn’t very open with his feelings. He’s still kind of distant. Although he does consider me to be his closest Army buddy, which says a lot. And that means a lot to me.

Squee!: I’ve read about your project at UC, in which you have your DAAP students work with combat veterans. How many of these projects have you worked on so far?

Tyler: One of the coolest things to come out of doing You’ll Never Know is what I do in my comics class at University of Cincinnati DAAP School of Art. It occurred to me that if I got so much out of my dad’s war stories, perhaps my students could benefit as well. So every spring quarter, I invite veterans into my classroom and pair them with students who conduct interviews and produce a two-page comic for them.

It’s a transforming experience. The students are amazed at the adventures and the danger, and how young the soldiers were when they served. And the veterans are honored that someone has taken the time to listen. Over the years, I have learned that listening validates experience and deepens understanding more than anything. We are never going to resolve the difficult issues in this world if we don’t listen to and understand each other.

Squee!: How have these two books affected your interpersonal relationships?

Tyler: People are used to it to some degree. I’ve been telling autobiographical stories for almost three decades. My stories make people both proud and pissed. For You’ll Never Know, I told everyone going in that there were two rules: 1) Don’t bug me about wanting an exact facial likeness. 2) The characters have to follow the necessity of a story’s trajectory.

In telling a story, it’s my goal to be as close to the truth as possible. But, you have to reshape things a bit in order to make overall sense. So while everything is pretty much true, I have to bend things here and there. Story crafting, I guess you could say.

Squee!: What were you trying to achieve when you set out to create these books? Do you feel like you’ve reached your goal?

Tyler: I just wanted future generations to know my parents and me. I didn’t want this time and place to get lost in the shuffle of what’s to come. I wanted to honor their generation, examine the baby boomer experience and document the millennial decade before it all slips away into history.

Have I achieved my goal? I don’t know. But I’ll be glad when I’m finished. I’m ready for my next book about seeing the Beatles in 1965. And then there’s my sister’s book on Autism to illustrate. And then this story called “Tomatoes” about my culturally diverse neighborhood. And then there’s . . . It’s endless.

Artist of the Month: Ricky Henry

This month, 27-year-old writer/artist Ricky Henry, a graphic design instructor at Antonelli College, will hawk copies of his new manga-inspired graphic novel, Monster Management Security Bureau of Cincinnati (MMSBC) at the Cincinnati Comic Expo on September 18. Squee! talked to him about his book, how imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, even if it’s in jest, and why an alien in a live-action anime film shouldn’t have to be Asian.

Squee!: How did you get started drawing comic books/graphic novels?
Ricky Henry:
I never really had any intentions to put out a graphic novel.  It’s not that I don’t love comics or didn’t think that I would be good enough, it’s just not something that was ever on my radar to do. I love cartooning and I enjoy teaching cartooning, especially as it relates to marketing and advertising, but the only book I had ever really set out to write was a text book about cartooning in advertising.  MMSBC started out as a film.  I always intended for it to be a film, but when the production took a nosedive, the best possible way for this story to live on was to do so through a graphic novel. In fact, looking back, I wish I would have thought of this first!

Squee!: Tell me about MMSBC. How did you come up with the concept?
Henry: Well, like I said it originally started out as a film.  I always loved Super Sentai. You know, stuff like Power Rangers and Ultraman. All of the costumes and monsters and explosions looked so cheap and easy to do, but in a charming way. Don’t get me wrong, I never intended to make MMSBC a parody of the genre; it was always a loving tribute. The concept changed a bunch, too.  Originally, the guys and gals gained the super powers by answering an ad in a local paper. Stupid, right? It eventually evolved into the coming of age story that it is today. I used the “morphing” and gaining powers as a metaphor for growing up and making changes in life. The only thing that survived from those original ideas was making the pink ranger a flamboyant metrosexual. Such a cheap gag, but I love it.

Squee!: Would you say MMSBC is “manga inspired”?
Henry: Totally!  You can’t have giant cicada monsters fighting a big mech and not have it drawn up in that style, which is risky. Manga-style is either done right or wrong—there is no in between. I see so much bad manga-style artwork that it’s kinda depressing. You know the kind, right?

Squee!: Yup, I do.

Henry: Usually found on badges at cons? I should probably shut up before I’m blacklisted from every con in the country. Do people read this?

Squee!: Uh, no, not really, but anyway…what elements of MMSBC reflect its manga/anime influence?

Henry: It borrows bits and pieces from several elements. When we were filming I would tell people that it’s an action-adventure romantic comedy. I think action fans who like DBZ or Gundam will dig it, and those quiet, lonely types who read stuff like Fruits Basket will probably be all about the love story and focus on relationship problems. The only thing I can’t own up to is that it doesn’t take place in Japan.

Squee!: How/when did you get into anime and manga? What drew you to it?
Henry: Anyone who lives in the Cincinnati area and is around my age has to know about the infamous TV25 (now WKRP) VHF station. If not for the airing of anime classics on over-the-air TV like Castle of Cagliostro and Golgo 13, then certainly for the late night bikini shows. This channel was something else. I remember being 12 or 13 and wrapping layers of tin foil around the rabbit ears to pull in all of the programming. It was my first introduction to anime or as they liked to call it in 1994, “Japanimation.” (I still prefer calling it that. It sounds better.) My jaw also dropped to China when I saw a boob in Grave of the Fireflies. Cartoon nudity means a lot to a 12 year old.

Squee!: What’s your all-time favorite anime and why?
Henry: The cool answer is Kinnikuman (M.U.S.C.L.E./Ultimate Muscle). It’s a mixture of two of my all time favorite guilty pleasures: Japanimation and pro wrestling. The embarrassing answer is Dragon Ball Z. I can’t help it. It’s just so good. Sometimes I hear my students arguing over who would win a fight, this DBZ guy or that DBZ guy, and I have to bite my tongue not to chime in.

Squee!: What’s your all-time favorite manga and why?
Henry: I don’t have one. Honestly, this is going to sound awful, but I only own maybe a dozen or so manga. Ranma 1/2, Lupin, Kinnikuman. That’s about it. I’m a much bigger fan of traditional comics. I love Udon’s Street Fighter comics as well as B-List DC characters like Booster Gold.

Squee!: What are you reading and watching these days?
Henry: Presently, I’m reading a bunch of textbooks on Adobe Creative Suite 5.  If you’re talking comics, well, I’m actually going back and reading the old Mortal Kombat books from Malibu comics. I’ve been in a ’90s mood lately. They just don’t make comics like that anymore. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing, but there is a certain charm. As far as what I’m watching goes, there’s the new season of Futurama, Man v Food, Dragon Ball Z Kai, and The Suite Life on Deck.

Squee!: The Suite Life on Deck? Really?
Henry:
Yep. No joke. [laughs] I started watching Fullmetal Alchemist because my wife is a huge fan, and I’ve been meaning to go back and start watching again. In fact, I should probably just read the manga. I hear it’s better anyway.

Squee!: So live-action anime movies: yay or nay?
Henry:
Yay! I really think they will be the next big thing. The kids now, they are being exposed to anime and manga way more than I was in the late ’80s and early ’90s. It’s only a matter of time before they get serious directors and film treatments. It took mainstream comics long enough, didn’t it? I was just as bummed as the next guy about Dragon Ball: Evolution, but I still think Justin Chatwin was a great choice for Goku. I’m so sick of hearing people complain about a “non-Asian” Goku. The dude is an alien. Since when did being from another planet mean he had to be Asian? Drives me crazy. No one says, “Well, the script was awful.” It’s always the Asian thing. I thought Chatwin looked just like Goku.

Squee!: Lastly, what are you working on these days?
Henry: Aside from teaching, I’m staying super busy planning a tour for the book, playing with my band, Shael Riley and the Double Ice Backfire, and getting ready for the birth of my baby boy! It has been an incredible year. This time last year, I had no idea that I’d be where I am today. And I guess I’ll leave your readers with that. Never give up. This time last summer, I was pretty miserable. I fought through the hard times, and now I’m married to the most perfect, most beautiful girl, expecting a little one, and really fulfilling a dream completing this book. I couldn’t have done it without my partner and former student, Chad Schoettle, either. He helps with the storyboarding and pencils, and is a true master at what he does. Texts From Last Night – The Manga-Loving Black Nerd

Me: I think I just found a manga-loving black nerd to love up on me. *fist bump*
Friend: A manga-loving black nerd, huh? That sounds rare. I’m impressed.
Me: I know, right?!? He’s close to my age, gainfully employed, and seems to have some social skill.
Me: I think he might be CCPM (company Christmas party material).
Friend: Kinda sounds too good to be true.
Me: Yea, I know. He probably has a girlfriend or lives with his mother or something.
Friend: You’ll never know unless you call him! Good luck!

Two weeks later

Me: I didn’t call.
Friend: Why haven’t you contacted the MLBN yet? He’s probably crying in his Pokemon pillowcase.
Me: LOL Because I’m a big ol’ wuss. Plus, you can’t be too forward with nerds. You’ll scare ’em.
Friend: Hints to give boys that should result in them asking you out: #1 call him (what have u go to lose?) #2 flirt (come on…just a little) #3 be funny (everyone likes free entertainment).
Me: I’m calling when I get off of work! Boom.
Friend: YES!!! Make that call!!! I am cheering you on!

I still haven’t called. *sigh*



My First Con

So I’m going to my first anime convention today and I’m more than a little nervous. What if I’m the oldest person there? What if I’m too dressed up? The last thing I want is to look like someone’s mother. What if I’m not “down” enough? The fact that I’m not only going as a fan but as a writer (I’m doing a piece on the con for Columbus Monthly magazine) throws an extra monkey wrench in the works. In preparation for this story, I’ve found that anime/manga fans aren’t very receptive to the media, which is understandable, I suppose…especially when nearly every story written about them is condescending in some way. *sigh* I guess I should stop my whining and go and see what happens. Matsuricon, here I come!


Anime/Manga and the Nature of Fanaticism

I’m not surprising anyone when I say that a lot of anime and manga fans are hardcore…really, really hardcore. I call anyone who would trek halfway across the country to get an autograph from his/her favorite voice actor or make and wear a homemade costume of his/her favorite character a fanatic. But what’s the difference between that and, say, someone who’s crazy about football, basketball, baseball, or soccer to the point of rioting? (*cough* World Cup *cough*) Why do we create a hierarchy when it comes to fanaticism?

“Activities that are engaged in by the majority of people tend to get mass approval compared to those that are niche activities,” says Dr. Mark Griffiths, director of the International Gaming Research Unit at Nottingham Trent University. He notes that he’s “never operationally defined fanaticism,” but that it’s “basically the extreme liking of something (e.g., pop group, soccer team, stamp collecting, etc).”

In two case studies on online gamers who both played up to 14 hours a day, Griffiths found that one was addicted and the other was not. Why? Because the addicted one’s game playing had an adverse effect on his entire life. “The difference between healthy enthusiasms and addictions are that healthy enthusiasms (i.e., most fanatical activities) add to life whereas addictions take away from it,” he says.

In a July 2009 article in the International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction on those case studies, Griffiths lays out the criteria for addiction: salience, mood modification, tolerance, withdrawal symptoms, conflict, and relapse. (He reiterated this in a blog post on soccer fanaticism a couple of months ago.) Interesting stuff. These could certainly be applied to almost anything, including anime and manga, no? I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately. I’m still pretty new at fangirling, but I work hard to maintain that delicate balance between my professional side and my “ship squee glomp” side.
